Distance Learning or Virtual Learning can be a challenging shift for any K12 educators. Teachers and students are asked to take on new skills and develop systems rapidly. There is currently a lot of support on using specific learning management systems, but not as much support in the instructional design of learning, which includes creating rigorous, engaging tasks that promote student ownership.
In addition, educator needs can vary across schools and within one building. This variation means that a 'one-size fits all' approach for professional development will not work for many schools. Based on feedback from our partners, there are varying needs related to distance/virtual learning indicated below:
- Differentiated supports across grade levels are needed.
- A variety of skills within and across grade levels related to managing distance learning.
- Engagement strategies to build student interest is an area of growth.
As an organization that has developed educator capacity in distance learning for several years, CERA staff will continue to support educators to design experiences that promote student ownership and engagement. Please let us know what supports you may need.
